About 24 hour comics
The 24 hour comic is a concept invented by Scott McCloud, who is a genius. To see a directory of 24 hour comics, rules for making one, and all that jazz, click here If you're just curious, and don't need to know a whole lot about them, read on.
The basic idea (as I understand it) is that a brave (and/or insane) cartoonist sets aside a 24 hour period in which to conceive, write, draw, ink, letter, and, if one is doing a webcomic, get an online home for, a 24 page comic story. (Note about the "online home for" bit: as far as I know, this does not mean make it all edited and pretty. This site did not look nearly so put together when the 24 hours were up. )... This seems like alot to do in one twenty four hour period, but really
Twenty Four Hour Comics day, an organized event whcih does the same basic thing, only all on the same day, all over the world. My comic is not part of it, but maybe I will do one, if I'm not busy that day...
About Waiting for Johnny
So, it goes without saying that Waiting for Johnny is a 24 hour comic. It's also some other things. It's historical fiction, set in 1918. The location isn't really important, it's a rural new england farming area, near the ocean. If you know much about the early 1900s, you would know that Armistice Day (please tell me you know that that's the end of WWI...you know that right?...right? ...*facepalm* ) was November 11th, 1918.
Story Origins:
I had been gardening on Sunday, June 10th, which was the day I began the comic. My father and I were breaking new ground for an extension of the garden. As I chopped at the sod with a hoe (narrowly missing my toes, and my father's head), I mused "how long d'you suppose it's been since this ground was last turned over. He said from the age of the local trees, probably about 80-some years (1927, if you don't want to do subtraction). So I was thinking about what the area would look like in the early 1900s. criss-crossed by stone walls, and mostly farm and pasture, is what. So, that was the setting I drew for the comic. The story was really sponteaneous. I knew I wanted to start with feet walking at the beginning. I wrote the script from there.
